A Celebration in a Glass!

After 2 long years we’re finally able to gather (safely) with the ones we love and celebrate holidays, occasions and milestones.  I missed gathering and hosting so much so these times together feel extra special.  When I’m planning a get-together I always check-in with my friend and sommelier, Elizabeth Davies.  She knows exactly what to pair with what I’m serving and always gives the best recommendations.  She’s basically my hosting secret weapon.  So, now I’m sharing her with you!!  Here are 3 wines she’s in love with right now, including what she calls her “desert island” wine that’s only $13.95!!  I asked Liz for something to please everyone this coming holiday weekend and she delivered the most delicious selections: a sparkling, a white and a red.

Cave Spring Blanc de Blancs Brut Sparkling: $32.95

Who doesn't love an excuse to celebrate? With people getting back together again, open up this incredible sparkling from Cave Spring made from Chardonnay. Take a sip and you'll get green apple and pear. There is also this beautiful bread and yeast character that is common in this traditional style of wine making. A perfect way to kick off your celebration! Pairs beautifully with charcuterie, appetizers, hors d’oeuvres and oysters.  Also excellent with plain potato chips (trust me!)

Château de la Grange Vieilles Vignes Côtes de Grand Lieu Sur Lie Muscadet 2019: $13.95 at the LCBO

Muscadet is a region within Loire, France. They make incredibly delicious white wines from a grape called Melon de Bourgogne . It is light and refreshing with no oak. Lemon, yellow apple, white flowers and delicious minerality. Because of this wine's refreshing acidity, it pairs with a diverse range of food but it's also great if you just want something to sip on.  If I could only have one wine for the rest of my life THIS WOULD BE IT!! I call it my desert island wine and it pairs really well with shellfish, ham, light like chicken.

Le Volte dell'Ornellaia :$29.95 at the LCBO

This bottle is a great way to impress the red wine lover at your table. It is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A portion of this wine was aged in old oak barriques, and the remainder was aged in concrete. This means that the impact of oak is subtle, yet it ties all the flavours together. And what are those flavours? Cherry, red currant, leather and dried herbs that are supported by gorgeous tannins. It will have no issue standing up to your rich dishes! Pair this one up with lamb or beef for a *chefs kiss* combo.

If you live in the GTHA or in the Kitchener, Guelph or Waterloo area, Elizabeth has an incredible wine delivery service that delivers 4 bottles of curated wines to your door complete with tasting notes and pairings.  You can subscribe, order a one-off box or gift one to the wine lover in your life.  A box of E.D. Wine Co. selections is my go-to thank you gift and any time I send one out people are instantly hooked.  More about Elizabeth and what she offers here.  She’s also got great tips and selections on her Instagram @edwineco
